20170525 Interview with HPAIR
Yesterday, the HPAIR committee informed me of
an upcoming interview today, hence I started sifting information on their website
and asked google how can I get myself ready for this. With time constraint,
since I still need to work during the day, I had little time to prepare, but
they made the call on time, I picked it up, our conversation thus began.
The guy from the other side of the phone is a
undergraduate student from Harvard Univ. (I think), he quickly asked me to
briefly introduce myself, why would I want to apply for HPAIR 2017 in Sydney. Simple question, simple answer. That was the first one.
Later on, he followed up with Asian countries
are facing environmental injustice, along with disproportionate energy use, what
phenomenon did you see and how would you tackle this problem?
You got me, this is too big of an issue. “if I
claim that I have a solution or a technique that can solve this problem, call
me bluffing.” But I am here to propose some simple solutions that can be applied
to individuals. Start from myself, I have stopped using disposable tableware
since last year before the military service. Last month, I saw an exciting news
came from Taipei City Government that they are determined to refuse disposable
tableware and plastic cups. Staffs are encouraged to bring their own steel
chopsticks, ceramic bowls at the cafeteria. Two aspects, one is from a personal
standpoint and the other is governmental.
The last question, he went on asking, name a
person you would like HPAIR to invite to give a talk, once again, I had no idea
whom I can recommend. So I started sharing my role model, TSMC, as a case in
solving the environmental issue and more critically, how did they put such
action plans into implementation, you can see their works in environment protection is well-recognized. They are truly the one who walks the talk. All
of a suddenly, a person came to my mind: Morris Chang! He is definitely the one
whom I would recommend, so please go on approaching to him.
He seemed quite satisfied with my answers. On the conference schedule page, some sections drew my attention, so I asked
him about the HPAIRx and the activity called Impact Challenge, the whole
interview was finished in 15 minutes, right on schedule!
