2016.01.15 IYDU Founding Meeting
Today marked the IYDU’s Asia
Youth Forum Founding Meeting and me being one of the three Taiwanese delegates
to present our country. I left my apartment early and hopped on a bus, but
suddenly I got a call from Lucy, vice CEO of Zephyr foundation, that Millie,
who is her assistant slept through the alarm and she couldn’t wait for her to
come. Lucy had to go to the building (where we are going to have our ceremony)
to set things up but the most important ones were left in the office, only
Millie had the key to get in. I just hopped off immediately after the call,
grabbed a cab then headed to the office and waited for Millie. When we finally
arrived the building it was already 9, I saw Owen in the conference, he came
earlier than me. This is a special occasion for students since we don’t have
such opportunity to observe an int’l meeting and have a conversation with young
talents from all over the world. This is something you can’t find at school, so
that’s why I reached out to Zephyr foundation and became part of it. And I did
treasure the opportunity given by Tony, I want to spread the spirit to my
friends who might share the same interested in international relations. I
started to invite some of them to join today’s event a week before, most of
them showed their interest.
Tony kicked off the meeting.
When it was time for our chairman of IYDU, Jason, to give his remarks, he did
it very well, he then thanked Sonny and I for the dedication and time, he said:
“Jerry, I know you like spicy food so I have prepared a gift for you.” I was
very surprised when he called my name, I went to the front and received his
little gift, that is a red pepper seasoning.
I had never been so honored at
that time, my friends were looking at me with admiration, I came back to my
seat and waited for my turn to get up there. Jessie, the first presenter and
also a pre-lawyer now, she just passed her bar exam, I was so happy to hear
that.
She talked about her numerous outgoing experiences, I could see all the
listeners were impressed, some even became her little fans. Sonny went second,
he showed everybody a video which took him countless time and efforts to make,
he had been to many festivals, national spots and even aboriginal tribes.
He
let everyone know Taiwan is a beautiful island and you should not complain that
there is no place to spend your weekend without knowing that there is a lot,
you don’t travel abroad just because you thought there are more you can see but
don’t even try to understand or compare our culture to one another. When it was
my turn, I made a brief introduction and talked about my outgoing experience in
Germany and mainland China. The second part of my speech was about the
industries in Taiwan. At last, I addressed the again society issue which is
going to hit Taiwan hard if need dealt with well.
After that came the Q&A,
I stressed more on my thoughts about Chinese students and the hyper-aged society
issue.
All in all, people said I did a great job, which made me feel relaxed. I
introduced some of my friends to the IYDU members, I was happy when I saw them
having a good time communicating with each other.

We were there till 2 pm, then
we proceeded to the executive yuan (行政院), we also had a tour inside.
Tony was
very thoughtful to think that it’s necessary to let the IYDU experience the
Buddhism culture. We went to Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Center, there the
masters and nuns tried to explain the spirit, I found it rather hard for them
to feel. However, we let them experience and hold a flower to make a wish.
Before dinner, they made a presentation and explained how the center works,
Sonny interpreted it, he did an incredible job, he slayed it out there. We had
100% vegetarian food for dinner. All these were recorded by BLTV (Beautiful
Life Television) and the news was released afterwards.
